POSITION PURPOSE: This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment within assigned district facilities. This position supports daily school operations by performing routine cleaning, basic maintenance tasks, and event setup to ensure a positive learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position will also be responsible for operating the student transportation vehicle safely and efficiently, transferring students between campus buildings during the school day.

 

SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm

 

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt; Full-Time

 

REPORTS TO: Custodial Supervisor

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Custodial Supervisor in accordance with Board policy GDN: Evaluation of Support Staff.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • OSHA 10-hour General Industry certification is preferred.
  • Possess a valid Missouri Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a (P) Passenger and (S) School Bus endorsement.
  • CPR and first aid certified.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Complete an annual physical examination by a licensed Doctor of Medicine within 60 days prior to the date of employment.
  • Has sufficient strength and agility to move about in a school bus as required to assist students in evacuating the bus. Successfully pass a physical test upon initial hiring and periodically throughout employment: The driver must be able to move from a seated position in a sixty-five passenger school bus, or the largest school bus the driver will be operating, to the emergency door, open the emergency door, and exit the bus through the emergency door, all within twenty-five seconds.
  • Successfully pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
  • Successfully pass required background checks before the first day of employment.
  • Possess and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to follow directions and complete assigned tasks independently.
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, and the public.
  • Willingness to learn and follow safety procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Cleaning

  • Clean classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, and common areas.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies.
  • Dust furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Clean windows, doors, and glass surfaces as assigned.
  • Operate equipment for cleaning and floor maintenance purposes.

Facility Support

  • Set up and tear down for events and activities.
  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks as assigned.
  • Report maintenance needs, safety concerns, or damages promptly.

Compliance and Safety

  • Follow proper procedures for handling and storing cleaning chemicals.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Follow established safety guidelines and district procedures.

Daily Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned work orders and daily task lists.
  • Maintain cleaning equipment and ensure proper use.
  • Secure buildings (lock/unlock doors) as assigned.

Shuttling Students

  • Transport students following specified routes according to an established schedule. Transport authorized students only, discharging students only at authorized stops.
  • Assume major responsibility for passengers’ safety, complying with safety and traffic regulations.
  • Drive safely, exercise responsible leadership, and professionally represent the school district at all times.
  • Comply with and enforce district policies and procedures.
  • Maintain student discipline according to the board-approved policy. Report behavior problems and student damage to the Transportation Director.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspection of the bus.
  • Clean bus interior, keep the bus fueled, and maintain equipment in a safe operating condition.
  • Report all defects, mechanical errors, interior damages, etc. as soon as possible.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports as soon as possible.
  • Participate in required annual training and safety meetings.
  • Participate in and successfully pass required, randomized drug and alcohol testing.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist with seasonal or deep-cleaning projects.
  • Work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The employee may stand, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods throughout the workday. Occasionally lifts, carries, or moves objects up to 50 pounds. May occasionally climb ladders or access elevated areas. Periodically bends, stoops, or kneels. Occasionally reaches overhead or at varying heights. May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, mechanical equipment, cleaning chemicals, dust, and varying environmental conditions.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Twelve-month employee with full-time benefits as established by the Board of Education. Paid holidays, PTO, and vacation days. This is an at-will position that may be terminated by either the school district or the employee with appropriate notice. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience and aligned with the board-approved classified salary schedule.
